About Health Masters Camp
Our camp uniquely prides itself on being a place where youth of multicultural backgrounds are provided a fun, active-learning environment which is totally committed to improving their health. The thrust of all programs is to educate, empower, and motivate youth to embrace a wellness ethic.
Located at The National Training Center, a sports and wellness facility owned by South Lake Hospital.
It center is open to the community through memberships and it also serves as a training facility for local, national and international athletes.
The NTC includes a 37,000 square foot fitness facility, aquatic center with a 70 meter x 25 yard outdoor heated pool, 400 meter track and field complex, multipurpose fields, cross country course and a softball complex.
One initiative of the NTC is to promote healthy lifestyle habits for youth. We have several avenues in which we do so. Along with the Health Masters Camp, the NTC also has a Kids Sports & Activities Camp in the summer that encourages kids to get active and stay active. They also have their own swim team, track and field training club and partner with a local soccer club. All of the NTC youth activities have scholarship opportunities for those in need with the hope that all youth have the opportunity to learn about living an active, healthy lifestyle.
Programs
CHILDHOOD OBESITY PREVENTION:
the forerunner in addressing a national epidemic. Youth are stratified according to their body mass index (BMI) risk level and receive increasing levels of behavioral intervention and lifestyle education to include improving nutrition and becoming more physically active. The program is implemented using mentors who are trained by the Medical Director and the Lifestyle 101© curriculum.
T.E.A.M. ORANGE
(T.E.A.M. Your Local School District):
a spin-off of the childhood obesity prevention program. Health Masters Club Team leads the way for other community-based agencies to partner on events which advocate the wellness ethic. Collaborative ventures are encouraged to include the local school districts, local school food service professionals, local PTA, and local health departments to promote national health promotion programs such as Healthy People 2010, USDA Team Nutrition, HHS Steps to a Healthier US, CDC Coordinated School Health Program Model, CDC REACH 2010 Model, ACA
5-A-Day, and the AHA Jump Rope for Heart/Hoops for Heart.
THREE ZONES/ONE HEART/ONE MASTER:
The Health Master Gold, Silver, Bronze Program is an achievement oriented wellness program which allows seasoned campers to raise their bar in success. After completion of the basic Lifestyle 101© Program, the participant enters one of three zones- mind, body, and soul. Each zone has different levels of competency based on their age.
When each level of competency is achieved, an award is given. This program is modeled after corporate wellness and the Presidential Challenge programs. The mind zone targets academic excellence by offering tutoring services and homework assistance.
The body zone targets physical fitness education and individualized health plan development by health coaches. The essence of the soul zone is a peer-run program which supports “The Healthy Relationshop,” a role-play centered relationship workshop, resistance skill-building (tobacco and other drug abuse prevention), injury and violence prevention with a focus on inter-personal violence such as domestic abuse and bullying.
NATIONAL SPORTS CONNECTION:
a link with America’s efforts to revive an active lifestyle by partnering with Professional Associations in baseball, basketball, football, golf, and others.
HEALTH MASTER CAMP FARMER'S MARKET:
a community-based market where nutrition education by trained lay workers as advocates for the American Cancer Association’s 5-A-Day program and where access to healthful foods is enhanced in low-income communities is improved. Local chefs participate in weekly cooking classes for the culinary-challenged.
CAMPERSHIPS:
scholarship opportunities for youth participants with one goal – to promote lifelong learning.

When parents are looking for a summer camp focused on wellness, they sign-up for Health Masters Camp, our signature program. This magical experience allows children to gain the confidence, knowledge, and skills needed to adopt a healthy lifestyle. A day program for campers ages nine through thirteen offers alumni an opportunity to return and earn community service hours as junior health coaches while in high school.

The camp director and health coaches foster an environment “where wellness becomes second nature,” and create a community which promotes lifelong learning, healthier eating and loads of fun play. Each day of camp offers an ideal approach to healthy living. Campers are encouraged to begin their day at home with a healthy breakfast, low fat milk, juice, and fresh fruit. A morning warm-up activity is the next order of the day.

Campers are involved with interactive learning on how to safely walk and bike to school or to their bus stop. Each camper receives a free bike helmet and learns how to properly fit it. The rest of the day includes a variety of exercises, games, swimming, team sports, educational presentation, herb gardening, zumba dance, healthy lunches and snacks.
Teachable moments throughout our day provide lessons on teamwork, leadership, respect, stress management, good character, and achievement. Cadres of guest speakers share their passions for healthy living, community service and excellence in learning.

Our camp blog captures memories with the following entries:
  • “I had fun doing the scavenger hunt.”
  • “Wow! What can I say. . . it’s pretty fun! I met some new people and swimming was a blast! Although I should still be sleeping, I’d much rather do this?”
  • “I love HMC so much. . . because it is fun and healthy for you.”
  • “This camp is off the hizzle for shizzle Yo.”
  • “A place where kids, make friends with so little effort,”

Camper J. asked his Mom not to come to camp with him today:
“I’m a big boy; no one else’s Mom goes to camp with them.”

From a Parent:
“Health Masters Camp has been such a blessing! What a great program! We will be back next year.”
